Instead of This, Buy That: Winter 2017 Investment Pieces

Apparently today is blue monday – allegedly the most depressing day of the year. Like most pseudo-science related subjects, retailers may have you believe that today is a great day to alleviate any blues with some retail therapy. And while I don’t think buying more stuff is the key to happiness, if you are thinking of shopping for some winter wardrobe updates, consider these options which are better for the planet, and have more wear power. Ultimately, these investment items also end up being kinder to your wallet too, due to a better cost per wear.

Metallic Moto:

I thought it was a whim, but my desire for a metallic statement piece, such as this moto jacket from ZARA, has not gone away. So I put the item on my list and went searching for a sustainable alternative to a trendy metallic moto jacket. My first stop was Thacker NYC – an online retailer that focuses on contemporary, yet totally timeless styles for the modern capsule wardrobe. I was so happy they had a metallic moto jacket on offer, but this one featured less hardware (read: not trend-focused) and a softer silhouette (read: timeless). So – instead of the faux, inexpensive metallic motos on offer, buy this:

Statement Coat:

Statement coats are always a winter favourite, especially since it’s cold, and there is no better excuse than functionality to make a fun purchase. It’s easy to get distracted by the fancy coats that are going on sale at this time of year, but as this is a more expensive (and practical) purchase, it’s important you snag the right one. Instead of snapping up a poly-blend embellished number that may not actually keep you warm, and that you’ll likely get sick of by the end of the season, look for a coat with classic lines and that is made with a cruelty-free fiber – like this gorgeous Canadian-designed beauty from Sentaler (Seriously cannot get over how gorgeous this coat is):

Geometric earrings:

Accessories are a great way to update your wardrobe, but going overboard and buying tons of cheap costume jewelry is still wasteful, even if it doesn’t seem that way because those pieces don’t take up as much space! (Seriously, I had a drawer full of jewelry that I always neglected because it didn’t seem as cumbersome as apparel – but unwanted jewelry can find a loving home in someone else’s closet too!) These simple studs from Mejuri are the perfect combination of forward and classic:

Athleisure:

The sportswear trend is one of my all-time favourites because of the round the clock comfort factor it allows, as well as its effortless vibe. The best way to interpret this trend from a longevity point of view is to go luxe and simple. So instead of a literal track pant, whose novelty will fade soon after your purchase, try these merino joggers from Ca Va de Soi; the classic silhouette works with sneakers or a chic heel.

  1. I loved this, Alyssa! The metallic Thacker NYC bomber is to die for and so is the Sentaler coat (love the shoes the Sentaler model is wearing too).

While I am a diehard shopper, one thing I hate spending money on is cheap
costume jewelry. I have a few key pieces of “good” jewelry like little pearl earrings, big pearl earrings, real gold bracelets and rings, graphic sterling jewelry and a good watch. They all complement and elevate every outfit. 👌🏾

    1. I’m so glad! I totally agree with you about inexpensive costume jewelry though – those pieces you have in your wardrobe sound so lovely and chic! xoxo

    1. lol Chantal you’re already an amazing person!! But i’m glad you like the recos – and I saw your last post without shopping, don’t be so modest! ;);) xox
