Accessory Special: Tamara Steinborn
Ottawa is full of creative people whether we want to admit it or not. Tamara Steinborn, creator and co-owner (along with her partner Nathan) of Wunderkammer in the Byward Market is one of those gems who most would think has an uber cool studio somewhere in Brooklyn surrounded by hipsters making their own soap. Naturally, a jewelry designer who has been in the business for 15+ years and who boasts large international brands as wholesale clients would perhaps want to keep a low profile while she conquers the world, so this jewelry designer chose Ottawa as her space.
Tamara Steinborn is launching a namesake label alongside her very popular and widely loved Frug line of costume jewelry. Her eponymous collection is beautiful and organic and yours truly got a sneak peek at some of the pieces. The necklaces come long and lean with detailed pendants at the end; perfect for layering or looping twice around (as I’ve done with my turtleneck, does it make me look like I have a double chin? Never mind.), and there are hammered bronze pieces with crystal that could easily resonate with a bohemian style.
What I love about these pieces, is that despite their distinctive rough hewn and detailed features, they seem to take on the style of the wearer. This obviously has a lot to do with how something is worn, but I was so pleased to find that one of the necklaces that caught my eye stood on its own with my structured blazer and black and white ensemble. Even more so, it didn’t look out of place when I threw on my much loved fanny pack for good measure. In fact, despite the necklace being so delicate, I really enjoyed the subtle impact it made.
But now it’s your turn to weigh in. Tamara and Nathan will be hosting a launch party at their store, Wunderkammer at 234 Dalhousie street in the Byward Market. The event is taking place on the 27th of October and if you like parties with personality, I would highly recommend you stop in for a visit. Not only will Tamara’s entire collection be shown (and up for sale) but you could get a Tarot reading, crystal ball reading, or a henna tattoo! The last time I got a tarot reading I thoroughly enjoyed it and I must say, this type of thing will totally get you in the spooky Halloween spirit if you’re not already.
